Bola Tinubu
Bola Ahmed Adekunle Tinubu (born March 29, 1952) is a Nigerian politician and former accountant serving as the President of Nigeria since May 29, 2023. Tinubu was born in southwestern Nigeria to Abibatu Mogaji, a prominent trader who later became the Iyaloja (market leader) of Lagos. He attended primary and secondary schools in Lagos and Ibadan before moving to the United States in the 1970s. He studied accounting at Chicago State University, graduating with a Bachelor of Science in 1979, and worked with accounting firms including Deloitte, Haskins & Sells, and GTE Services Corporation before returning to Nigeria.
Political Rise
Tinubu entered politics during Nigeria’s short-lived Third Republic, winning election as Senator for Lagos West in 1992. After the annulment of the 1993 presidential election, he joined the pro-democracy group National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) and was forced into exile until 1998. He became Governor of Lagos State (1999–2007), where he was credited with expanding the state’s tax base, developing infrastructure, and modernizing public administration.
